Yes, this is another Facebook post. But hopefully this is a helpful one. See, as easy as it is to create a Facebook profile, there are several different ones and they do different things. Before the creation of Pages, most companies were represented on Facebook by groups created by their rabid fan base. Smaller companies tried to create this same engagement by making Facebook profiles and adding users as friends.

Many small business ventures are sprouting up as a result of this most recent recession. Americans are not the type to sit idle, hoping and praying someone comes around and hands them a job. We’re a proactive bunch, steadily looking forward for the next problem we can solve. The good thing is that this is helping our economy. The question is, “are we doing any good?”

This week, I was able to delve into the wonderful whitepaper from comScore, “Women on the Web: How Women Are Shaping the Internet.” Included in this 30-page feast of data are morsels that could prove useful to any small business looking to target women effectively online, particularly in the social space. Among the many interesting stats that are addressed, one stood out above the rest for me.

The Power of Social Media

Social media is powerful. Obvious statement? Sure, but the exact potency of its strength is still being measured. What we know for certain is that the ability of small groups or singular individuals to influence public opinion has not been this strong since the printing press was first invented. News reports are being made into hit songs on YouTube, people are being hired over Twitter, and new industry leaders are emerging as companies try to get a handle on what exactly their place is in this space.
